In New York, the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon took part in the joint action of Tajikistan with Group of Friends of Water titled “Priority actions on water resources, climate change, natural disasters risks reduction” within International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018 – 2028”.

President of the country, Emomali Rahmon, expressed his satisfaction with the successfully conducted first dialogue devoted to the launch of the International Decade of Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018 – 2028”.

The head of state, Emomali Rahmon urged that we should enhance and reinforce our efforts to achieve water related goals and targets.

Expressing concern over an unprecedented growing impact of climate change on nature and socio-economic situation of Tajikistan and Central Asia, the President of Tajikistan stressed that such natural disasters as inundation, mudflow, avalanche and landslide cause huge damage to the people and the national economy of the country every year.

Moreover, negative impact of climate change mostly hits quantity and quality of safe drinking water. Over the last decade, Tajikistan experienced rapid unprecedented ice melting, which is a vital source of life for all people and countries in Central Asia. Intensive ice melting and loss of glaciers in the region which are provoked by and inseparably linked with climate change effects, acknowledge the necessity and magnificence of such Strategy.

It was noted that Tajikistan places particular emphasis on measures aimed at advancing adaptation to climate change which is essential in sustainable development.

In the sidelines of the launch of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development, 2018-2028”, the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon attended the High-level luncheon hosted by the President of the General Assembly and UN-DESA titled “In search of water energy nexus: SDG 6 and SDG 7 Synergy”.

President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon extended his sincere appreciation to organizers of today’s event and noted that Tajikistan in every possible way supports an idea of seeking water energy nexus and is willing to build strong cooperation with all stakeholders in promoting the best solutions in water and energy sector.

The President of the country pointed out that hydropower continues to be an important driving element for socio-economic development in many countries. Being endowed with tremendous water resources and immense hydropower potential, Republic of Tajikistan continuously declares its willingness to cooperate with all interested parties, and first of all, with neighboring countries, on efficient, mutually beneficial and rational use of water and energy resources in the interests of all countries of the region.

Leader of the Nation Emomali Rahmon met with the Chair of UN-Water, President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Gilbert F. Houngbo

On the sidelines of the opening of the launch event of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018-2018, the Founder of Peace and National Unity – Leader of the Nation, President of the Republic of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon received Gilbert F. Houngbo, the Chair of UN-Water / President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) in New York.

At the beginning of the meeting, the President of the country Emomali Rahmon congratulated the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) Gilbert F. Houngbo on his appointment as Chair of UN-Water.

The head of state noted that we must be aware of the importance of water to human development and its service for future generation and added that Tajikistan is an active country in advancing water issues and the launcher of most international initiatives in this field.
